Because of Sarah’s combined interests and background in nursing and community health, Skip’s Place takes an interesting stance when it comes to the role of farms in society. And that is the concept that farms are not being used to their fullest therapeutic value for the communities in which they exist. In today’s complex and ever-changing world, there is a need for farms that extends beyond their traditional role of food production.
At the farm’s most basic level, Skip’s place aims to provide high quality, clean, nutritious, fresh produce to consumers. Many have heard of the new or not so new moniker of our age is that food is medicine, or you are what you eat. So of course, Skip’s Place strives to provide you with only the best. But in today's world farms, much like human bodies, are not basic. They are beautiful and complex with many moving parts each influenced and imparting influence on other moving parts. So why should a farm aim to only serve its community at the most basic level, when we know our communities and bodies are more complex than this?
The ultimate goal of Skip’s Place is to support and honor the complexities of its community and the people in it. Skip’s Place will do this by not only providing high quality, clean, nutritious, fresh produce by way of sustainable and intentional growing practices but also by working to bridge the gap between food systems and holistic health with the use of community programs. These programs will be integrated into the workings of the farm and will be designed to educate, empower, promote holistic health and be specific to the direct public health needs of the surrounding community. In this way, Skip’s Place will operate at its fullest therapeutic potential for both the people and the land it serves.
In these early stages of Skip’s Place, the farm has started on the path to achieving its ultimate goal by providing produce, food education through the use of the website and interactions with CSA members and farmers market attendees, and food donations to various community organizations. With every passing season Skip’s Place will be working tirelessly to add community programs and further bridge the food and health system gap. So stay tuned!!
